McAfee Startup Errors and Support

I've not had a lot of luck with technology of late. First my laptop melted, leaving me with a 1700 quid doorstop after Toshiba told me that they could only sell me an international warranty in the country of purchase, despite being valid worldwide. Great. Luckily I had a resonably fresh backup of my whole HD on my external drive so I didn't lose much. After giving up on the laptop I bought myself a shiny new Shuttle PC and spent a week of nights building it and getting everything re-installed. I reckon I've lost a week of working time thanks to all that. Now, about a month on, I thought I was finally back up and running properly. Not so.

Yesterday my machine started taking 10mins to startup. Eventually I'd be given a handy "NT On Access Scanner Service has encountered a problem and needs to close." error, caused by McAfee VirusScan. A search on Google revealed that it's quite a common problem but after hours trying to find solutions on the McAfee site I eventually got onto their Chat Help system. Bit annoying, quite slow but it works. For anyone else with the same trouble and not wanting to waste several hours of their life, you need to do a manual update. That simple. Why was it not in the knowledge base? Why was I pointed to a patch for a version of the software I don't own? No idea.
