I came across Ilkka Uimonen's site while reading through EXP this morning and absolutely had to steal it. The work here is incredible - beatiful pictures of disturbing subjects including Afghanistan, East Timor and Pakistan. Each collection of photos is prefaced by a brief description of the events the pictures document making the viewing all the more poignant. He's a member of Magnum, the elite photojournalists collective, and in my book that confirms that he's a bit special...
Another EXP find was Ami Vitale, a Delhi-based photojournalist. I wasn't quite as affected by her photos as as Ilkka Uimonen's - the pictures are more beautiful but perhaps not quite as emotional. On the other hand, the site is better. There is information about each photo available, as well as an over view of events, and I really like the navigation's use of thumbnails and rollovers...
UPDATE: I just had another look through Ami Vitale's site, reading the captions properly this time, and I take back what I said about the pictures not being as emotional. The Guinea-Bissau ones are especially disturbing but highly recommended...
